NAM JUNE PAIK MUSEUM

E-mail Print PDF

NAM JUNE PAIK MUSEUM This is a competition for a museum for a Korean expatriate artist (Nam June Paik), living in the USA.

The competition is sponsored by the UIA (International Union of Architects). The site is a hilly area with a steep valley in between.

The site has a thick tree cover. Based on the work type of the artist, the concept is a single structure spanning the valley between the two hills of the site. It acts like a bridge between the past and the future over the present.

The giant screen hanging between the top floor and the bottom one move back and forth to give fluidity to the museum and add life to its contents rather than the museum being a tomb for art. As shown on the colored elevation above, these giant screens reflect some of the artist’s work and provide changing information about the artist and his work.

The entrance to the building is from below the building to an atrium that raises the full height of the building. The structure is composed of a steel space frame that carries the three stories of the museum..
